New Site Up
I have finally decided that it's time to have my own, personal website up and running, with which I can advertise my skills and services. I previously used teh_node for this, but after much thought, and chatting to others, realized that teh_node may have been the wrong website to advertise myself.
There were 2 main issues:
Firstly, teh_node is advertised as a business, yet I was using it as my personal site and portfolio. People got confused when I sent them the link to teh_node, thinking I'm working in that company, and the work there are of the company, not realizing that the teh_node is my company.
Secondly, the general design concept for teh_node was to be very clean and clear, with lots of space. Something that does not really communicate my design or technical skills. The problem here, as expressed in some online resources I was reading, is that a client comes to your website, to “see” what you can do. Clients that are not really up to date with technology, dont necessarily care how the back-end of the site works. Their first impressions of your work is based on what they actually see.
So the idea in creating this website was firstly to create a site that is personal, for me as a service provider, and secondly to create something with a bit more design and graphics, and to move away from the empty spacious teh_node.
At this stage the design of the site is far from finished. I built the site very rapidly, because I had to get something up as quickly as possible. Now that the website is up I can get back to work on more important matters, and I can create more visuals and fix up the styles a bit in my spare time.
The tools I used to build this site are all Open Source and include: Inkscape, Gimp, Python, Django, Git (version control), GVim (for the coding). JQuery and Flowplayer (the flash movie player).
